Best of Me, The

Nicholas Sparks
"Everyone wanted to believe that endless love was possible. She'd believed in it once, too, back when she was eighteen."In the spring of 1984, high school students Amanda Collier and Dawson Cole fell deeply, irrevocably in love. Though they were from opposite sides of the tracks, their love for one another seemed to defy the realities of life in the small town of Oriental, North Carolina. But as the summer of their senior year came to a close, unforeseen events would tear the young couple apart, setting them on radically divergent paths. Now, twenty-five years later, Amanda and Dawson are summoned back to Oriental for the funeral of Tuck Hostetler, the mentor who once gave shelter to their high school romance. Neither has lived the life they imagined . . . and neither can forget the passionate first love that forever changed their lives. As Amanda and Dawson carry out the instructions Tuck left behind for them, they realize that everything they thought they knew -- about Tuck, about themselves, and about the dreams they held dear -- was not as it seemed. Forced to confront painful memories, the two former lovers will discover undeniable truths about the choices they have made. And in the course of a single, searing weekend, they will ask of the living, and the dead: Can love truly rewrite the past?

Amanda Collier and Dawson Cole fell in love in 1984 in the small town of Oriental, North Carolina. In their senior year of high school, the couple separated due to unexpected events. Years later they return to Oriental for the funeral of Tuck, a mutual friend who helped them both during their unlikely relationship. They have not lived their lives as they wanted, and cannot forget their first love. They carry out Tuck's final instructions, but what they knew about Tuck, themselves and their dreams were not as they seemed. I enjoyed the book...the story line drew me in and kept me coming back for more, but I did find some of the plot points, especially toward the end, a little predictable and almost impossibly coincidental. I felt the more surprising and unexpected twists had to do with Tuck rather than the couple themselves. But overall, the story was a good read.

“Because you aren't just someone I loved back then. You were my best friend, my best self, and I can't imagine giving that up again." He hesitated searching for the right words. "You might not understand, but I gave you the best of me, and after you left, nothing was ever the same.”

Gotta confess something first; Nicholas Sparks has become my favorite author.Second,Dawson is my favorite character!
Now coming back to the book review, there's nothing much to say because its a beautifully written heart-touching love story.I like my romance books to have happy endings unless.. the sad end is justified.Nicholas Sparks knows how to do both.
Childhood sweethearts driven apart by -fate.Reunited,will they get back together?

*Realistic characters
*Nice quotes, you eventually get some answers regarding what love really is.
*Obligations that come with relations are very well explained.

“Love, after all, always said more about those who felt it than it did about the ones they loved.”
Recommend it to those fond of reading LOVE stories.

I've been rather disappointed with the author's last two books. this was certainly not one of his better ones.
