Bell Jar, The

Sylvia Plath
Esther Greenwood is brilliant, beautiful, enormously talented, and successful, but slowly going under—maybe for the last time. In her acclaimed and enduring masterwork, Sylvia Plath brilliantly draws the reader into Esther's breakdown with such intensity that her insanity becomes palpably real, even rational—as accessible an experience as going to the movies. A deep penetration into the darkest and most harrowing corners of the human psyche, The Bell Jar is an extraordinary accomplishment and a haunting American classic.

Insanity
Suicide attempts
Charming writing style
It's amazing how Sylvia Plath wrote something so gloomy so perfectly!
But the disturbing fact is; the author committed suicide, she wasn't saved.

A very interesting story to follow, but always felt I was just following the main character at a distance without ever really being let inside - like I spent a lot of time with someone and never got to really know them. Ultimately a little disappointing.

Even though it was published in the early sixties, this book is surprisingly fresh and relatable. Sylvia Plath is funny and self-deprecating despite her subject, and her vivid writing reveals someone who is keenly aware of being alive, even if she does not always take joy from it.

Gorgeous and ground-breaking, this novel manages to connect to the reader and the little metaphoras, the broken timeline, Esther's humanity, her vulnerability and strenght mixed together - they all prove why Sylvia Plath is one of the best authors of her generation.

This book was depressing. It didn't even have a happy ending, it just ended. Ok writing style; overall just ok.
