kinds of love as there are hearts.”
An unhappily married attractive woman falling in love with a young man, society putting the blame on her scorning her for deceiving her husband,a classic tale of doomed love - I definitely was interested.
Writing about adultery, when you are trying to portray it as true love, difficult job it is.
Needless to say,the author did an amazing job.Leo Tolstoy wrote something that convinces the reader of such wrong type of right love that's deep & intense enough to make one deceive and lie.
Could being like that bring true happiness to oneself?
"I don't want to prove anything, I just want to live; to cause no evil to anyone but myself. I have that right, haven't I?”
Secondary characters are written so well & in detail, you get to look deep into their thoughts & personalities.
Levin's character is quite likable despite the shortcomings. What I didn't like about this book was the unnecessary emphasis on Levin's country life, the details were irrelevant (It was tempting to skip those pages they bored me to death).
At times, the story seemed dragged, hence the four star rating.Overall its a masterpiece.Recommend it to those who love classics and those romance lovers who don't mind reading long books.
Reviewed: 2015-07-17I think Tolstoy did a remarkable job depicting an accurate portrayal of a fallen woman and the personal troubles that come with the position in Anna Karenina. He didn't stop with just her characterization and problems but included many different personal struggles in the characters of this story - a loss of faith, a desire for faith but an inability to understand it, the political problems in Russia during the Serbian and Turkish war and conflict, and many more. I struggled to sympathize with Anna at many points but found the side story of Levin and Kitty to be a welcome relief from Anna's many issues. It's a long story worth your time.
