H2O

Virginia Bergin
.27 is a number Ruby hates. It's a number that marks the percentage of the population that has survived. It's a number that means she's one of the "lucky" few still standing. And it's a number that says her father is probably dead. Against all odds, Ruby has survived the catastrophic onset of the killer rain. Two weeks after the radio started broadcasting the warning, "It's in the rain. It's fatal and there's no cure," the drinkable water is running out. Ruby's left with two options: persevere on her own, or embark on a treacherous journey across the country to find her father-if he's even still alive.

Great take on what would happen if there was acid rain or a virus contaminating the water! I love how she portrays the end of the world and civilization if water is deadly.

This book was pretty good. I can't say it was the best thing I've ever read because it wasn't. There was something sort of off about the writing that I didn't like, but I can't put into words. Still, it was good and enjoyed reading. Not entirely sure I want to read the next one though!

Virginia Bergin's first novel is a fast romp through an apocalyptic scenario with a plucky teenage heroine. Ruby, our young protagonist, tells us her story in an authentic teenage voice as she deals with the trauma and chaos swirling around her. There are a few plot holes that niggled at me, but I was willing to overlook them as I was enjoying all the action. Teens and lovers of apocalyptic fiction will definitely enjoy this and it's sequel, 'The Storm.'

Themes in 'H2O' include survival, persistence and determination, peer pressure, and interpersonal relationships (family, friends, and romantic). This would be a great reading choice for students in grades 7-12 who are working on inference, visualizing, and predicting strategies, or who just want an enjoyable, high-action read.
