The novel “Thirteen Reasons Why” is a book that appeals to both males and females with the way that it is written and the topics that is involved within. It is rare to find a book that will appeal to all genders and learning styles to teach and begin the discussion of the difficult topics. With all of the anti bullying programs implemented in schools theses days and the wider range of acceptance that it would be less of a problem, but bullying and suicide is just a prevalent as ever.

The book may have been published in 2007, but the message never stops being powerful. The book is great for the high school level, to promote discussion on the importance of bullying, harassment, teasing, assault and any other form of aggressive behavior. This books gives many opportunities to teach about the differences between truth or rumor, cause and effect, the possibilities of ‘just joking around’ with somebody and how much of a problem technology and being anonymous can be.

Personal stories can be written as a follow up to the story, have the students start a autobiography of their life, or something more creative. Find a puzzle with many pieces that show a lot of detail. Use this as a metaphor to show the students that one missing piece or one piece that may not fit will change the entire meaning of the piece.

“Thirteen Reasons Why” is one of the top ten most challenged books in many states for 5 main reasons. It is only banned in 1 or 2 states, but many schools will not allow it to be part of the curriculum. the first reasons being bad language, the second bullying. The third is sexuality. There is a pretty vivid rape scene that happens in the book where the main character watched her best friend get raped. Some states use the religious viewpoint as the 4th reason. Main of the characters do not believe in god. The fifth reason is suicide, the main girl commits suicide and she leaves 13 tapes to 13 different people on why she committed suicide.

I read this book some years ago, but was instantly captivated by its story. Its not on of those books were I instantly predicted the ending, it held an air of mystery about it that made it impossible to put down.

Great book with exceptional form of closeness to the main character's thoughts and emotions. You can feel and understand everything that happens within the character. A realistic telling of unrealistic events. Not a too complicated style of writing, both giving the book a sense of authenticity when it comes to words from a teenage girl, but also not giving it the fully written experience a writer might prefer. Truly heartbreaking story including all the trials and tribulations a teenager can face. All from big ones to small ones that might have a massive impact on each individual.
