Jodie Foster
Single mom, Dede Tate, is raising a bright 7-year old son named Fred. While Dede is of average intelligence, Fred is a budding genius. Fred is a whiz at math, reading and piano playing. Fred's abilities only isolate him from his schoolmates. Fred attracts the attention of former child prodigy and school psychologist, Jane Grierson. Jane convinces Dede to allow Fred to attend her school where his gifts will be appreciated. Fred thrives in his new school environment and is soon studying quantum physics in college. Meanwhile, Dede heads to Florida for the summer. Fred befriends adult college student, Eddie. Fred is fine until he breaks under all the pressures of academics and cultural life. Fred runs away. Dede rushes back to help her baby.
