It was known that a registered clone would not be identical to the original human. But could it be possible to manipulate a child to become nearly the same as the parent, or perhaps even better? What would it be like to be that child, to learn that certain events were engineered to duplicate your gene parent's life? Learn that, and also what might motivate the adults around such a child. Cyteen is the planet where the AZI, the artificial humans bred to populate worlds, to act as servants and soldiers are born in artificial wombs. It is also where a special child is born.

Wow, what a journey. Everything about this was an astounding read that kept drawing me back in. Parts of it felt rushed, but overall I loved it. I highly recommend giving this title a go.

This is one of my all-time favorite books. It's enormous, and set on a world called Cyteen that is only partially terraformed, where humans have resorted to designing and cloning people to make up the population necessary to colonize the world and keep its infrastructure and military working. The book takes place at Reseune, the scientific station where the Azi, Cyteen's designed humans are designed, born, and trained, and follows the life of Ariane Emory, the head of Reseune, first at the end of a long and industrious career, and then as a cloned child who's life is being shaped to recreate to recreate the first Ari's genius.

The attention to detail and world-building that go into Cyteen, the Azi, Reseune and the politics that surround Ari are simply amazing. It's a complex book who's plot revolves around politics and sense of self and what it means to be human instead of Azi instead of lots of action, but that's what I love about it. It's one of a kind and I would totally recommend it.
