Hunting Prince Dracula

Kerri Maniscalco
In this hotly anticipated sequel to the haunting #1 bestseller Stalking Jack the Ripper, bizarre murders are discovered in the castle of Prince Vlad the Impaler, otherwise known as Dracula. Could it be a copycat killer...or has the depraved prince been brought back to life? Following the grief and horror of her discovery of Jack the Ripper's true identity, Audrey Rose Wadsworth has no choice but to flee London and its memories. Together with the arrogant yet charming Thomas Cresswell, she journeys to the dark heart of Romania, home to one of Europe's best schools of forensic medicine...and to another notorious killer, Vlad the Impaler, whose thirst for blood became legend. But her life's dream is soon tainted by blood-soaked discoveries in the halls of the school's forbidding castle, and Audrey Rose is compelled to investigate the strangely familiar murders. What she finds brings all her terrifying fears to life once again.

I am loving this series! I had a feeling I would, but the time to read it never felt quite right. I'm having to squeeze reading in between classes and balance homework vs reading, but it's worth it. If you haven't picked up these books yet, I really recommend them. Though be warned that they are pretty creepy! I made the questionable to decision to stay up late at night to finish this, and I went to bed with the heebie-jeebies. And if you're squeamish about blood/bones/dead bodies, there's a lot of that.

Fun fact: I asked my osteology professor if a certain tree made of bones in the book was actually possible, and she said it could be. Gotta use the right bones (femurs and humeri are a lot more durable than say, a rib) but building a tree out of bones that could be climbed is totally possible!

This one was just as good as the first! It isn't quite as gruesome as the first, I don't think. Stalking Jack the Ripper constantly had me cringing from how detailed some of the scenes were. This one....had it's moments but overall the post-mortem descriptions were few and not quite as detailed. Unlike in the first, where I had my suspicions about who the culprit was, I was totally blindsided on this! And I'm really glad for that.

One of the biggest points I have for this book was the fact that Thomas got so much development and depth. You learn more about his family and he shows his faults and vulnerabilities. Goodness, I swear he's perfect. I love him immensely and he's one of the best YA male leads/interests I've ever read. Audrey Rose has her ups and downs, but Thomas is always the best.

I'm already excited for the next one!
