In this second book of the Akata Duology, Sunny Nwazue (an albino African who spent her early years in North America) is adjusting to life in Nigeria. She’s a part of the magical Leopard People, where she studies with her mentor, Sugar Cream, and practices new juju moves with her three best friends: Orlu, Chichi, and Sasha. She and Anyanwu (an ancient spirit of the Leopard People who was in Sunny) are now separated; due to this, Sunny is often subjected to encounters with the evil Ekwensu. When visions and dreams begin to haunt her, Sunny realizes she's been chosen for a dangerous mission to destroy Ekwensu. To accomplish this, she and her friends must travel from Nigeria to Lagos. Will they succeed? Okorafor creates a complex book that is equal parts history, mystery, and fantasy; she weaves these elements together in an engrossing whole. Her imagery transports her readers into a magical world. Readers who enjoy fantasy will look forward to the next installment about Sunny and her friends’ escapades. Submitted by: J.B. Petty

This is definitely a sequel that isn't lacking compared to the first. I am obsessed and already have more of this author's works on my list to pick up on my next library run. I saw that Okorafor said there will be a third book. I am praying it doens't take another 7 years to write like this one! Also, I've already convinced one friend to start reading the Akata books.
