Why We Broke Up

Daniel Handler
I'm telling you why we broke up, Ed. I'm writing it in this letter, the whole truth of why it happened.Min Green and Ed Slaterton are breaking up, so Min is writing Ed a letter and giving him a box. Inside the box is why they broke up. Two bottle caps, a movie ticket, a folded note, a box of matches, a protractor, books, a toy truck, a pair of ugly earrings, a comb from a motel room, and every other item collected over the course of a giddy, intimate, heartbreaking relationship. Item after item is illustrated and accounted for, and then the box, like a girlfriend, will be dumped.

I just fell more and more in love with this book as time went on, especially when i gazed in awe at the gloriousness that is pages 335 to 338 :) I wasn't sure about this author at first but I'd definitely be willing to read any other young adult novels that he writes.

I loved the illustrations in this book, but the story did nothing for me. Each chapter is about a memento that Min is returning to Ed with a commentary about each one, and by the middle of the book I was tired with the format. I found Min an annoying character and her voice didn't sound sound like a typical teenager's. As for Ed, he was a total moron. This book was not worth the time it took to read it.
