This book is exactly what it says it is - a reader’s guide to the land of Tortall, containing details and extra pieces of story that haven’t appeared in the several series of books that Tamora Pierce has written to take place in the realm of Tortall. It’s put together as a series of documents compiled by spymaster George Cooper, a familiar character if one has read any of Pierce’s previous Tortall books. Visually, it’s very appealing. Great care has been taken to make the pages look like they were handwritten on parchment, and there are a few illustrations of favorite and familiar characters. However, it’s not a story as such, and it will be incomprehensible to readers unfamiliar with all of Pierce’s Tortall books. Also, if one hasn’t read her books, there are spoilers for some of her series.
