Divergent, written by Veronica Roth is a great teen novel that I think all adolescents should read. This novel is about a 16-year-old girl named Tris Prior. Tris lives in a future world where her society is divided up into five factions. As each person enters into “adulthood” they must take a test that tells them what faction would fit them the best. At the choosing ceremony all are encouraged to choose the faction the test results gave them however there are some who do not fit into any faction and those people are called divergents. Divergents are those people who do not fit into just one faction but in many factions and Tris, is one of those divergents. Tris must hide her results and choose a faction that she can commit to be in for life. While all of this is happening, Tris also uncovers a war that is about to happen that threatens everyone she loves.

Divergent is a novel that I think teens should read because it has an amazing storyline and teaches literary techniques as well. Roth writes this dystopian novel using a compartmentalized society, a misfit protagonist, and dangerous secrets. It shows how you should be yourself even if you don’t fit in and how not all people in a society are the same. It is a great novel for girls to read because it shows how a teen girl can be brave and a leader. Not to mention it has a suspenseful cliffhanger ending.
