First Grave On The Right

Darynda Jones
First Grave on the Right is the smashing, award-winning debut novel that introduces Charley Davidson: part-time private investigator and full-time Grim Reaper. Charley sees dead people. That's right, she sees dead people. And it's her job to convince them to "go into the light." But when these very dead people have died under less than ideal circumstances (i.e., murder), sometimes they want Charley to bring the bad guys to justice. Complicating matters are the intensely hot dreams she's been having about an Entity who has been following her all her life...and it turns out he might not be dead after all. In fact, he might be something else entirely.  This is a thrilling debut novel from Darynda Jones, an exciting newcomer to the world of paranormal romantic suspense. First Grave on the Right is the winner of the 2012 Rita Award for Best First Book.

Fun, fun, fun book!

First off, I loved Charley's voice. She was funny and sarcastic and just really a lot of fun. And I know I've used that word several times way too early in this review, but it's true. This book has some hilarious, laugh-out-loud moments and was just a delight to read.

The set-up of the world is something that's a little bit different--at least in my experience. Private detective Charley is also a grim reaper, in that those who have passed over are drawn to her as she's their gateway into the great beyond. Other than that she's a normal person. normal as one can be when one is constantly being followed around by ghosts. She uses her unique ability to help her uncle, a police detective, solve his open murder cases, and also to provide closure for those poor souls who can't move on until justice has been served.

The supporting cast is just as fun as Charley...I especially loved her best friend, Cookie.

Now we get to Reyes. I like the idea of Reyes, but I am holding out judgement on that part of the storyline until we get a little bit further into the series. I liked what I've read so far, but...I don't know. I can't explain what I'm thinking.

Anyway...can't wait to read the next book in the series as soon as possible!
