House of Hades (Heroes of Olympus, Book 4), The

Rick Riordan
At the conclusion of The Mark of Athena, Annabeth and Percy tumble into a pit leading straight to the Underworld. The other five demigods have to put aside their grief and follow Percy's instructions to find the mortal side of the Doors of Death. If they can fight their way through the Gaea's forces, and Percy and Annabeth can survive the House of Hades, then the Seven will be able to seal the Doors both sides and prevent the giants from raising Gaea. But, Leo wonders, if the Doors are sealed, how will Percy and Annabeth be able to escape? They have no choice. If the demigods don't succeed, Gaea's armies will never die. They have no time. In about a month, the Romans will march on Camp Half-Blood. The stakes are higher than ever in this adventure that dives into the depths of Tartarus.

This book took me awhile to get through, not that I wasn’t interested but just that I had a lot on my plate this summer and reading kind of took a back seat. Once I did finally get to sit down and read it, I really got immersed in the story as I always do with Riordan’s books.

I really enjoyed seeing the development of the other heroes in this book! Hazel finally learns to control the mist and Piper becomes more confident with her abilities and we see Frank finally become Praetor and also we find out that Nico is gay! I must admit that took me by surprise, but I think it’s important because to have a character of a very popular book series “come out” is extremely important for kids to see that there should be no prejudice against someone for who they have feelings for and that even if you are not the “norm” that you are still 100% capable of doing great things and that your sexuality does not limit you in the least bit.

I’m really excited to read to final installment of this series, I know it will be a tough read but I look forward to The Blood of Olympus.

This book was a lot faster going than the last three. I looked forward to Annabeth and Percy's chapters because hearing the description of Tartarus and picturing Annabeth and Percy there was exciting. As a reread I still deeply enjoyed those chapters. I know what went on with the others on the Argo II was important, but I felt like this book was just about Percabeth and it felt like I was reading the Percy Jackson series.
