Anna Dressed in Blood (Anna, Book 1)

Kendare Blake
Cas Lowood has inherited an unusual vocation: He kills the dead. So did his father before him, until he was gruesomely murdered by a ghost he sought to kill. Now, armed with his father's mysterious and deadly athame, Cas travels the country with his kitchen-witch mother and their spirit-sniffing cat. They follow legends and local lore, destroy the murderous dead, and keep pesky things like the future and friends at bay.Searching for a ghost the locals call Anna Dressed in Blood, Cas expects the usual: track, hunt, kill. What he finds instead is a girl entangled in curses and rage, a ghost like he's never faced before. She still wears the dress she wore on the day of her brutal murder in 1958: once white, now stained red and dripping with blood. Since her death, Anna has killed any and every person who has dared to step into the deserted Victorian she used to call home.Yet she spares Cas's life.

This was a fun story. It was really atmospheric and thrilling to read. When I read the description, I got really strong Season 1 Supernatural vibes, and honestly, reading this book gave me the same thrills that the show used to give me. The story was well written and there were some really cool twists that kept me guessing. The last few chapters kept me in suspense because it was playing so differently from what I had expected.

I did get a little annoyed sometimes by Cas’s “I’m a lone wolf, friends are unnecessary attachments” attitude but I’m happy that he grew past that once he realized that needing help, and needing friends, isn’t so bad. On top of that, yeah these are all kids hunting down a ghost, but they’re still very much kids. Cas drops f-bombs, the boys tease each other about their crushes, The relationship he had with his mother was nice, and it was touching to see how much he actually did depend on his mom and made the effort to be a good son.

My Rating: 4.5/5 Stars
It was a really fun read that kept me flying through the pages. The atmosphere was spooky and the story went places I didn’t expect it to go to. The writing was good in that I felt like I was reading about actual teenagers. The story was just really good and entertaining.
