Gods in Alabama

Joshilyn Jackson
For 10 years Arlene has kept her promises, and God has kept His end of the bargain. Until now. When an old schoolmate from Possett turns up at Arlene's door in Chicago asking questions about Jim Beverly, former quarterback and god of Possett High, Arlene's break with her former hometown is forced to an end. At the same time, Burr, her long-time boyfriend, has raised an ultimatum: introduce him to her family or consider him gone. Arlene loves him dearly but knows her lily white (not to mention deeply racist)Southern Baptist family will not understand her relationship with an African American boyfriend. Reluctantly, Arlene bows to the pressure, and she and Burr embark on the long-avoided road trip back home. As Arlene digs through guilt and deception, her patched-together alibi begins to unravel, and she discovers how far she will go for love and a chance at redemption.

I recently read 'Backseat Saints' and enjoyed it so much that I wanted to read another by this author. They read well independently, but 'gods in Alabama' was written first, each novel using some of the same characters.

I love this author's voice. This type of book has been done over and over but she writes with such a fresh voice that it doesn't sound just like everyone else. I enjoyed the way the story goes back and forth between the ten years since Arlene made her three promises to God, revealing the story in slowly. And just as 'Backseat Saints', the twist at the end didn't disappoint.

Definitely worth the read.

This is a lighthearted, enjoyable book that kept it's secret right up until the end. Lena's promises are in exchange for her getting away with murder. She promises God to stop fornicating, never tell another lie and to leave Alabama and never come back. All goes well for about ten years despite her Aunt Flo's weekly attempts at getting Arlene to come home for a visit. Lena is able to keep her promise even to the extent of keeping boyfriend Burr at bay.

When Rose Mae Lolly shows up asking questions, Lena hightails it back to Alabama hoping to head her off and prevent the secret from escaping. You'll have to wait until the very end to find out what happened to Jim Beverly and why.
