“Arram held his head in his hands, but it was useless. Another surge ran through him, through his Gift. He lost control...The entire workroom was waist-high in water.” Tamora Pierce’s first Tortall book with a male character at its center follows the young life and education of Arram Draper, who later becomes the familiar and scatterbrained mage Numair Salmalin. Arram starts school in Carthak as a gifted student, outstripping his classmates and struggling to maintain his attention and his powerful magical Gift in his class. As in the previous books featuring him as a grown man, he shows symptoms of AD/HD. He isn’t alone, however - his school allows him to switch to a high individualized track of study, along with Ozorne, future emperor of Carthak, and Varice. The story is long, and lacks the traditional narrative structure - there is hardly a climax of action at all. But Pierce’s descriptions of Carthak are spellbinding, as well as the build into her world of Tortall. This book introduces the politics of the gods that will hold sway over Arram’s life as well as immerses readers into the world in which he lives. Readers of Pierce’s previous books will recognize other characters as well. For a lover of the Tortall books, this new piece is like a warm visit home. For those who haven’t read any of Pierce’s work yet, this is an excellent introduction into her world of Tortall and Carthak.
