Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, The

Junot Diaz
Oscar is a sweet but disastrously overweight ghetto nerd who—from the New Jersey home he shares with his old world mother and rebellious sister—dreams of becoming the Dominican J.R.R. Tolkien and, most of all, finding love. But Oscar may never get what he wants. Blame the fukú—a curse that has haunted Oscar’s family for generations, following them on their epic journey from Santo Domingo to the USA.

The beautiful story of a dreamer and an outcast who gets no respect or love yet deeply impacts everyone around him. Perhaps his life is because of a curse on his family, or perhaps it's because he's a nerdy, smart, overweight brown-skinned man in America. Either way, this was a stunning book when it came out and sparked a cottage industry of people trying to imitate the style. There are literary references, sci-fi references, nerd-core references, great dialogue, laugh aloud moments and I dare you not to tear up at least once. Oscar is a gentle man, driven slightly mad by love and passion, seeking a place that feels like home who is not fully understood or appreciated by anyone soon enough.
