I read this for my 12th grade Women’s Literature class and I was a bit apprehensive in the beginning but this book has forever changed me and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed meeting all of the characters and learning their stories. There are laughs and twists with every new page and the character development is the most dynamic I’ve ever read. Flagg perfectly writes the female gaze and internalized female rage that I have felt personally. I resonated deeply with the themes and learned from the lessons that characters had to teach. I will always remember how this book brought tears of laughter, joy, sadness, and anger to my eyes. I also will remember the complex themes addressed in the book such as racism, sexism, and class issues and how Flagg addressed these issues in a way that was ahead of her time. Thank you to the universe for bringing this book to me.
