The Reptile Room is the second book in the series, A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket. The book tells the story of the Baudelaire orphans, where they are sent to live with their distant relative, Montgomery Montgomery, also known as Monty. Happily content with their new home, the children believe that this is where they will be staying. However, this soon changes when their evil uncle, Count Olaf, arrives disguised as various different people; such as Gustav and Stephano. The children realize that Count Olaf is back to steal their inheritance and know that he killed Monty. Filled with themes of jealousy, family, and death, The Reptile Room is a book that I would teach to 6th and 7th graders in order to show how jealousy can make people do bizarre and horrendous acts.
