Essays in American Colonial History

Ed. Paul Goodman
From the Preface: The purpose of this volume is to make more readily available studies of America's colonial period that have appeared as essays in scholarly journals. These articles are concise reports of investigations, many of which have been elaborated in books, and thus they afford students a convenient, brief introduction to the scholarship of America's formative years. Instead of trying to include essays on all aspects of colonial development, I have generally chosen pieces that are interpretive. The selections are reprinted as they originally appeared except for the omission of footnotes. Preceding each essay is a brief bibliography of leading works on the subject of the essay to aid students who wish to explore further.
