The Outsiders is one of those books you were supposed to read in school, but it was never assigned to me. It's referenced a lot as a great movie and in other YA books and as a cultural artifact in general. After reading Fangirl, which harped on how slim this book was, I decided to finally pick up The Outsiders.

There's something about the simplitcity and raw honesty and pace of the tragedies that makes this book so moving. It's hard not to feel for Ponyboy and the gang (but seriously, what kind of name is Ponyboy?). I was getting emotional reading it on the subway. It gets to the heart of many issues about poverty and social class and self-worth and how you can't really understand someone else's life and who they love.

It feels appropriate to have read this in its 50th anniversary. Tulsa may not be like this precisely anymore, but the emotions of the story still really resonate and these issues of class haven't gone away.

Overall: Stay golden, YA literature.
