Since childhood, Sabriel has lived outside the walls of the Old Kingdom, away from the power of Free Magic, and away from the Dead who refuse to stay dead. But now her father, the Mage Abhorson, is missing, and Sabriel must cross into that world to find him. With Mogget, whose feline form hides a powerful, perhaps malevolent spirit, and Touchstone, a young Charter Mage, Sabriel travels deep into the Old Kingdom. There she confronts an evil that threatens much more than her life'and comes face to face with her own hidden destiny. . . Garth Nix's first young adult novel, Sabriel was recently nominated for the Aurealis Award for Excellence in Science Fiction in Australia.

Why did people not tell me about this awesomeness sooner? I will add Sabriel to my list of badass women who don't care about your filthy gender norms.

I'll admit, any time I tried to read this book after like, 9:30pm, the prose would put me to sleep for the first 150 pages. I don't know why, I consciously really liked it, and the entire story is action-packed, but I couldn't keep it together.

It felt like every little detail mattered in this book (though sometimes the writing was just bad, so, that took me out of it a little), which is what I love in a book. It's short and face-paced but I felt like I really understood the complex world, even though I had to learn it along with Sabriel. While this really did feel like a stand-alone novel, I can see how there's so much to unpack in the following books (got into this right when the prequel comes out! Good timing, me.).

Pretty excited to continue with this series.
