ONYX AND IVORY by Mindee Arnett is the first book in the Rime Chronicles. While there is no news yet on the sequel, the author told me on Twitter that is was coming. I know I can’t wait for it! Mindee Arnett has also written the Arkwell Academy trilogy, a paranormal book series, and the Avalon trilogy, which takes place in outer space! Her various novels show a versatility in writing skill, and she has something for everyone.

ONYX AND IVORY takes place in the fantasy land of Rime. It is bordered by other countries, as seen in the amazing map. Unlike the countries around it, Rime is the only nation with people who can use magic. Most of the other countries don’t play a big role in the novel, though I have a feeling they will in the future, especially the mythical nation of Fenmore.

The novel features to main POVs. There’s Kate Brighton. She is the daughter of a presumed traitor, in that her father attempted to kill the king. The thing is, no one knows why. After all, her father and the king were good friends. Since then, she lives in hiding as part of the Relay, their version of the post office. She rides horses between walled cities, making sure to get to safety before dark, lest she be killed by a Nightdrake. Nightdrakes are wingless dragons that feed on people. I loved Kate from the moment I met her. She was fearless in the face of danger and would do anything for those she cares about.

There’s also prince Corwin Tormane, just Cor to his friends. He is the younger prince of Rime. He and Kate used to be in love, but fell apart after her father tried to kill his and then her father was executed. We get his first POV after he sees Kate for the first time in years. It is clear right off the bat that he is hiding secrets. Then again, so is Kate.

Along with Kate and Corwin, there are some amazing side characters. There are Kate’s best friends, Bonner and Signe, along with Corwin’s best friend Dal. Bonner and Kate share a secret, that they can use forbidden magic. Signe is from the island nation of Esh, and is often unfamiliar with Rime customs. Signe and Bonner are both incredibly upbeat characters that provide immense support for Kate. Dal is like Bonner and Signer to Corwin. They met when Corwin left Rime for two years, and have been inseparable ever since. Dal is the jokester of the group. He comes from a complicated family, but he doesn’t let that slow him down.

The amazing characters combine with a spectacular world to create a thrilling novel. There are three separate parts of the book, but they flow together seamlessly. Over the course of the book, I often end up with more questions than answers. With each mystery Kate solves, she unveils countless more. What starts as a novel small in scope quickly expands to a world epic in scale.

I devoured most of ONYX AND IVORY within 24 hours. I barely did anything else during that time except read. I highly recommend it to fans of high fantasy YA. I think ONYX AND IVORY will be a stand out novel of 2018 that all fantasy fans should read!
