Ehhh. The ending just doesn't make a whole lot of sense and feels really contrived just to have a "twist ending". Plenty of other good suspense thrillers out there. I would skip this one.

This was a Reese Witherspoon Book Club selection from months ago that I just got around to reading.

I will say that the ending had a twist that I definitely wasn’t expecting, but it couldn’t save the book for me.

I never bought that Emily actually was so in love with Adam that she allowed for all of his terrible behavior or his mother’s.  Until Emily got pregnant, I couldn’t understand why she just didn’t walk away from Adam and not just because his mother was acting crazy…..Adam was moody, rude and mean and Emily deserved better.

I also didn’t buy that Pammie couldn’t just come clean and tell Emily that Adam was a bad person…she could have done this without exposing Rebecca’s murder.  And, if Adam was so terrible, why didn’t Pammie just report Adam to the authorities and face the consequences?

I never got that Emily was controlled by Adam and that is why she stayed although that is what the basis of the book.  It didn’t ring true to me that a smart, successful woman with her own money would stay.  It’s not like they had years of time invested in the relationship.  He was a jerk from nearly day one.

The reviews all said what I’m feeling….this was a fast read that was hard to put down and is perfect for the beach, but I still don’t buy it…..

I made it to page 15 before I decided that I couldn't spend more time with Emily. She behaves as if she's 19 - 20. At one point it seems as if she's late 20s early 30s, due to her life experience. The writing isn't anything special, and there are better, creepier mysteries that will keep your attention.
