Starless Sea, The

Erin Morgenstern
From the New York Times bestselling author of The Night Circus, a timeless love story set in a secret underground world--a place of pirates, painters, lovers, liars, and ships that sail upon a starless sea. Zachary Ezra Rawlins is a graduate student in Vermont when he discovers a mysterious book hidden in the stacks. As he turns the pages, entranced by tales of lovelorn prisoners, key collectors, and nameless acolytes, he reads something strange: a story from his own childhood. Bewildered by this inexplicable book and desperate to make sense of how his own life came to be recorded, Zachary uncovers a series of clues--a bee, a key, and a sword--that lead him to a masquerade party in New York, to a secret club, and through a doorway to an ancient library, hidden far below the surface of the earth. What Zachary finds in this curious place is more than just a buried home for books and their guardians--it is a place of lost cities and seas, lovers who pass notes under doors and across time, and of stories whispered by the dead. Zachary learns of those who have sacrificed much to protect this realm, relinquishing their sight and their tongues to preserve this archive, and also those who are intent on its destruction. Together with Mirabel, a fierce, pink-haired protector of the place, and Dorian, a handsome, barefoot man with shifting alliances, Zachary travels the twisting tunnels, darkened stairwells, crowded ballrooms, and sweetly-soaked shores of this magical world, discovering his purpose--in both the mysterious book and in his own life.

This book was exactly the fantasy escape read I needed. If you had told me how it alternated between the main story and short stories from other collections I'd probably not have read it because I don't love non-linear storytelling. My attention-deficit brain struggles with that kind of narration. But I think because the excerpts were short and you could feel their connection to the story, it was easier to keep up with. I did kinda want to re-read it all again as soon as I finished it to try to make more sense of all of the connections.

I would give this 4.5 starts if I could. I think my only complaint was some of the storytelling in the end/resolution felt rushed but that may have just been me struggling to follow some of the explanations in the end.

This is the kind of story that I love experiencing without knowing anything about.

I came for the lyrical and elegant words of Erin Morgenstern, but stayed for the wonderfully real characters and interwoven plot. Both Dorian & Mr. Zachary Ezra Rollins will hold a special place in my literary loving heart.
This book is as sweet as the honey-filled waters of The Starless Sea, as poetic as the stories that interlace the narrative and filled to the brim with a story lovers dreams.
I can't say enough about this beautiful book and will forever dream about The Harbor on the Starless Sea.
Now, lets cut to the chase. Where can I find my door?

This book was.... indescribable. If you are the kind of person who struggled to find a place in the world where you truly belong and turned to fiction to fill the gaps, this book is for you.
