Ruin and Rising (The Grisha Trilogy)

Leigh Bardugo
The capital has fallen. The Darkling rules Ravka from his shadow throne. Now the nation's fate rests with a broken Sun Summoner, a disgraced tracker, and the shattered remnants of a once-great magical army. Deep in an ancient network of tunnels and caverns, a weakened Alina must submit to the dubious protection of the Apparat and the zealots who worship her as a Saint. Yet her plans lie elsewhere, with the hunt for the elusive firebird and the hope that an outlaw prince still survives. Alina will have to forge new alliances and put aside old rivalries as she and Mal race to find the last of Morozova's amplifiers. But as she begins to unravel the Darkling's secrets, she reveals a past that will forever alter her understanding of the bond they share and the power she wields. The firebird is the one thing that stands between Ravka and destruction—and claiming it could cost Alina the very future she’s fighting for.  Ruin and Rising is the thrilling final installment in Leigh Bardugo's Grisha Trilogy.

This was a brilliant way to end a trilogy. The ugly crying was real and I felt this was a good way to wrap up the characters and their arcs. There was a tremendous amount of twists and turns that I really did not see coming (where she was taking the story and the plot points involved). There was a big reveal that was given in this installment that I was able to see coming by the end of the last one but it was still interesting to see how all it unfolded. I really didn’t understand how people liked The Darkling after reading the series when I first started but now, I completely understand which is shocking for even myself. At first I felt bad for liking him but then more of his story was revealed and it made sense why one would like him (maybe his story isn’t enough of an excuse for all he has done but *shrug* who knows). I do wish there was more revealed on Alina’s lineage and where she came from, why she has the power that she does. On that front, I was a bit unsatisfied. Other than that, ugly cried my way through this one.

I had a hard time getting into this book initially because it felt a bit monotonous and like they have been struggling with the same things for a while. It took a turn when big spoiler *** Mal ended up being an amplifier. Wasn’t expecting that at all. I actually really enjoyed how it ended and it was a somewhat happy ending even if I didn’t really like Mal all that much in the first place. Still love the Darkling but it was his time so that felt okay.

By the end of this last book, I was really tired. I felt that it dragged on and characters that were introduced in this book didn't really stick for me. I didn't really care for them. In the last few chapters I was bored, I really wanted to just get to the final scenes. Overall the series was interesting but I wouldn't reccomend it as a fave of mine. It's a good story to pass the time but nothing I've not read before. There's a few twists and turns but no real moments that shock you. Pretty predictable throughout, not necessarily a bad thing as sometimes predictability is nice. Final thoughts, if you're looking for a read thats something different and surprising, this isn't it. The world is intriguing but the storyline leaves you wanting just a bit more of something new.
