Raina Telgemeier
From the artist of BSC Graphix comes this humorous coming-of-age true story about the dental drama that ensues after a trip-and-fall mishap.Raina just wants to be a normal sixth grader. But one night after Girl Scouts she trips and falls, severely injuring her two front teeth. What follows is a long and frustrating journey with on-again, off-again braces, surgery, embarrassing headgear, and even a retainer with fake teeth attached. And on top of all that, there's still more to deal with: a major earthquake, boy confusion, and friends who turn out to be not so friendly.

Smile written by Raina Telgemeier is #1 New York Times bestselling memoir that is based on her childhood. If our middle school, teenage years weren’t hard enough having braces didn’t make it much easier. Raina was just your average sixth grader just trying to fit in. One night while at girl scouts, she encounters an unfortunate fall that results in her losing her front two teeth. As a sixth grader just trying to fit in this is probably the worst thing that could have happened to her. Throughout the book we see the constant struggle that Raina faces with not only all the dental work she gets done but what any normal sixth grader goes through. As a sixth grader Raina struggles with boy drama and friends who see soon sees aren’t real friends. On the friends end we see Raina grow and learn that she shouldn’t expect anything less than people who make her feel good and not bad.  This book truly takes you with Raina on her journey side by side with every struggle she faces. In the end Raina finds self-acceptance and just like her teeth she realizes that although they may not be perfect as time goes on and they work on them they get better. I feel this story is extremely relatable and teaches many lessons that young teenage girls could relate to.
