It was like a season of Supernatural, except with the angst metered a little differently, and the humor wrenched way up (not that Supernatural can't do humor, but that's not my point right now. Also, Supernatural doesn't do sustained humor. Stop digressing). There was certainly angst, because of the death of a loved one so early in the book. But there was also mystery and the slow reveal of the nature of death as the book progressed. The character of Charlie really went through a lot during the course of this story, about six years, and grew and changed in response to the demands of his life, which nicely reinforced the main theme of the book.

Only Christopher Moore can make death hysterically funny, sad, insightful and sweet all at the same time. Charlie Asher, dealing with a terrible loss, discovers he is a chosen one. He has the dirty job of being the newest member of the Death Merchants whose primary job is to gather soul and help the departed move on. How he deals with this revelation and the chaos that surrounds him is a very funny story. This story had me actually laughing out loud with tears in my eyes. This is an instant favorite.
