Candide (Dover Thrift Editions)

Voltaire
Witty and caustic, Candide has ranked as one of the world's great satires since its first publication in 1759. In the story of the trials and travails of the youthful Candide, his mentor Dr. Pangloss, and a host of other characters, Voltaire mercilessly satirizes and exposes romance, science, philosophy, religion, and government. A selection of the Common Core State Standards Initiative.

"Candide" should be required reading for pre-teens. It will help prepare them to question everything. And hate everything.

Quite the series of unfortunate events, but many other writings follow that formula. Perhaps it is necessary so we can live in the best of all possible worlds.

I identify with this book a lot, reading it was kind of a religious "pause and reflect" ("Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect." -Mark Twain) moment. Plus, it's short, and you know I love short books.
