Everything, Everything

Nicola Yoon
This innovative, heartfelt debut novel tells the story of a girl who’s literally allergic to the outside world. When a new family moves in next door, she begins a complicated romance that challenges everything she’s ever known. The narrative unfolds via vignettes, diary entries, texts, charts, lists, illustrations, and more.  My disease is as rare as it is famous. Basically, I’m allergic to the world. I don’t leave my house, have not left my house in seventeen years. The only people I ever see are my mom and my nurse, Carla.  But then one day, a moving truck arrives next door. I look out my window, and I see him. He's tall, lean and wearing all black—black T-shirt, black jeans, black sneakers, and a black knit cap that covers his hair completely. He catches me looking and stares at me. I stare right back. His name is Olly. Maybe we can’t predict the future, but we can predict some things. For example, I am certainly going to fall in love with Olly. It’s almost certainly going to be a disaster.

Second reading... and in SPANISH!
My first (okay, technically second) book I managed to read in Spanish with my pathetic level. Still managed to make me angry and tense and stuff, so I would call that a win.

Maddy is a seventeen year old girl who has never once stepped outside her house. Being diagnosed as a baby with SCID, she has lived her entire life inside her house with just her mother and her nurse, Carla. From day to day Maddy’s life is always the same and nothing unexpected ever happens -- until Olly moves in next door. The story is told from Maddy’s point of view through diary entries, texts, charts and other various forms of writing, which allows the reader to really fall in love with this charismatic teenager. Nicola Yoon does a beautiful job showing how two completely different people can be in the same predicament and how that common ground can have an effect on each other’s lives by demonstrating what it truly means to be free and loved at the same time.

A book about a girl (Madeline) who can’t go outside due to a rare genetic disorder (severe combined immunodeficiency, or “bubble baby disease”) and falls in love with new boy next door (Olly) via emails and emojis may not sound like the best candidate for a movie adaptation, but that’s just how great _Everything, Everything_ is. There’s an easy beauty to Yoon’s prose, an irresistibleness to the forbidden romance, and an addictive apprehension about how this could all possibly end that makes _Everything, Everything_ a compulsive read. Though she’s been stuck in her house for the past 18 years, Maddy’s desires for love and a more adventurous life are highly relatable, and I have no doubt that Amandla Stenberg (who played Rue in _The Hunger Games_) is perfect to play the part in the movie version. A must-read for anyone enamored with John Green’s _The Fault in Our Stars_ or Gayle Forman’s _If I Stay_.

Overall: Katniss is happy for Rue here. But Katniss still won The Hunger Games. And winning The Hunger Games still matters more.
