Copperhead Volume 1: A New Sheriff in Town

Jay Faerber
Welcome to Copperhead, a grimy mining town on the edge of a backwater planet. Single mom Clara Bronson is the new sheriff, and on her first day she'll have to contend with a resentful deputy, a shady mining tycoon, and a family of alien hillbillies. And did we mention the massacre? Questions swirl around not only the murder mystery, but around Sheriff Bronson herself. What brought her to a place like Copperhead? Is she running from something? Or towards something? Collecting Copperhead #1-5, the debut story arc in Image's gritty new sci-fi/western mashup!

A competent but tedious police procedural in space western drag.

Don't get me wrong. I LOVE space western drag. But to do a western in space, you need to understand two things. First, you have to have some grasp of what makes a western different from some all the other permutations of cops and robbers. Second, you need to give the SF elements something to do that is essential to the story. Otherwise it's just silly and decorative.

Put another way, with minimal changes to the dialogue, you could transport this story to any small town in America, and not lose a thing that mattered.

I am a sucker for space western style SF, but for my next fix, I will look elsewhere.

Really liked this one. It had a good story arc that finished at the end of the volume, so no crazy cliffhangers, but it still left me wanting more of Clara and Zeke. Can't wait for volume two.
