Color Purple, The

Alice Walker
Celie is a poor black woman whose letters tell the story of 20 years of her life, beginning at age 14 when she is being abused and raped by her father and attempting to protect her sister from the same fate, and continuing over the course of her marriage to "Mister," a brutal man who terrorizes her. Celie eventually learns that her abusive husband has been keeping her sister's letters from her and the rage she feels, combined with an example of love and independence provided by her close friend Shug, pushes her finally toward an awakening of her creative and loving self.

I have not seen the movie and considering some of the reviews I have read, the movie might have swayed the review I would give the book on its own. I agree with many of the reviewers, the book did contain a lot of explicitly described sex, physical abuse and incest, but I did not find that to make the book itself poorly written. I absolutely love the way Alice Walker told the story, the voice was unique. The dialect might take some a bit to become accustomed to, but it felt real. Everyone gets a different take on the theme, but to me, I felt it was acceptance and forgiveness. It's easy to forgive your neighbor for taking your newspaper off your porch, but when it's things like beatings, lying, rape, it become much, much more difficult. It's also easy to walk around with a care-free attitude when you have no worries. The characters in THE COLOR PURPLE had more than their fair share of worries and issues to overcome and I enjoyed following them on their journey to inner peace. Different strokes for different folks, but I would recommend this to anyone looking for something a little out of the ordinary.
