I've only read one other Steinbeck, which was another short one called Cannery Row. Now I really loved that one but whilst his writing and ability to craft true to life characters is the highlight, I had a problem with the ending. I understand why it happened the way it did but it left me with an uncomfortable feeling in my stomach. It kinda felt that the book advocated for killing mentally disabled people, which I know isn't really what the point of it was, but it still felt weird for him to be compared to an old dog that needed to be put out of its misery. Just didn't sit right with me.
