I didn't hate this book, but I didn't love it either. Simon is by far the most interesting character, everyone else just seems like a cardboard cutout. Entertaining cardboard cutouts, sure, but still cardboard. And I don't know if it's because I've seen this specific story told so many times, what with the movie and now the show, or if it's just too much of a cliched plot, I just felt like we were going through the motions to get the end point. What I did enjoy though was that it didn't end completely hunky dory, there were lasting stakes that carried on through to the second book which was a bold and smart choice on Clare's part.
