City of Ashes (Mortal Instruments)

Cassandra Clare
Don’t miss The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, soon to be a major motion picture in theaters August 2013.Clary Fray just wishes that her life would go back to normal. But what's normal when you're a demon-slaying Shadowhunter, your mother is in a magically induced coma, and you can suddenly see Downworlders like werewolves, vampires, and faeries? If Clary left the world of the Shadowhunters behind, it would mean more time with her best friend, Simon, who's becoming more than a friend. But the Shadowhunting world isn't ready to let her go—especially her handsome, infuriating, newfound brother, Jace. And Clary's only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine, who is probably insane, certainly evil—and also her father. To complicate matters, someone in New York City is murdering Downworlder children. Is Valentine behind the killings—and if he is, what is he trying to do? When the second of the Mortal Instruments, the Soul-Sword, is stolen, the terrifying Inquisitor arrives to investigate and zooms right in on Jace. How can Clary stop Valentine if Jace is willing to betray everything he believes in to help their father? In this breathtaking sequel to City of Bones, Cassandra Clare lures her readers back into the dark grip of New York City's Downworld, where love is never safe and power becomes the deadliest temptation.

I freaking love this book. I think it's better than the first one. The characters get more depth. There's real emotion. The stakes are higher and the plot is more complex. I just love it.

It's getting a lot better and I found myself enjoying the story more than I did the first book. While there were a few things that put me off, I did rather enjoy it. I can nitpick everything I disliked, but honestly I liked more things then I disliked. For example, the incest part, was kind of awkward. But I'm pretty much used to reading about things like this, as I am a Criminal Justice student. To be honest, I keep thinking in the back of my mind that they aren't really brother and sister (because I am rooting for them) so I'll keep my fingers crossed for that. I wish there was more there, I mean do they really love each other? I barely saw anything to suggest they did... so that's why I knocked off a star (that and the whole Alec and Magnus thing, I wish their story was told in better detail I do want know more about them). Clary can be a little annoying as well, I mean she doesn't do anything, by now she should be kicking some ass. Just saying. But other then that I enjoyed the story, I loved learning more about other downworlders, I love Simon, Maia, Luke, & Isabelle. Jace is an douche, but he's getting a little better now. Clary just needs to step up her game, she could turn out to be an amazing shadowhunter is she stopped wasting time obsessing over boys and training with Isabelle, that's what I would do but hey guess she just wants to be the damsel in distress. I am looking forward to reading City of Glass and I hope Clary improves.
