Clockwork Angel (The Infernal Devices)

Cassandra Clare
Magic is dangerous—but love is more dangerous still. Discover the “compulsively readable” (Booklist) first book in the #1 New York Times bestselling Infernal Devices trilogy, prequel to the internationally bestselling Mortal Instruments series—now with a gorgeous new cover, a map, a foreword, and excusive bonus content! Clockwork Angel is a Shadowhunters novel. When Tessa Gray crosses the ocean to find her brother, her destination is England, the time is the reign of Queen Victoria, and something terrifying is waiting for her in London's Downworld, where vampires, warlocks, and other supernatural folk stalk the gaslit streets. Only the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the world of demons, keep order amidst the chaos. Kidnapped by a secret organization called The Pandemonium Club, Tessa learns that she herself is a Downworlder with a rare ability: the power to transform into another person. What’s more, the Magister, the shadowy figure who runs the Club, will stop at nothing to claim Tessa's power for his own. Friendless and hunted, Tessa takes refuge with the Shadowhunters of the London Institute, who swear to find her brother if she will use her power to help them. She soon finds herself fascinated by—and torn between—two best friends: James, whose fragile beauty hides a deadly secret, and Will, whose caustic wit and volatile moods keep everyone in his life at arm’s length…everyone, that is, but Tessa. As their search draws them deep into the heart of an arcane plot that threatens to destroy the Shadowhunters, Tessa realizes that she may need to choose between saving her brother and helping her new friends save the world…and that love may be the most dangerous magic of all.

Let me start by saying that I am not a fan of love triangles, at all.. This was one no exception.

Although I really enjoyed Jem, I didn't feel any real connection between him and Tessa. That being said, I really enjoyed his character and everything that he was. I now understand all the "protect Jem at all costs" comments and posts. I agree :)

I don't have any strong feels regarding Jace (oops sorry, I meant Will) or Tessa. Although I did like her character well enough and I found that I didn't roll my eyes at her at all. She was a likable heroine who did not become someone else overnight as soon as she found out she was special. She didn't develop amazing fighting skills or unshakable bravery, I liked that. Don't get me wrong, she did become braver but it was believable character development.

The real kick in the balls was Nate, that boy... haha, bless his soul.

Also, I thoroughly enjoyed Magnus Bane foreshadowing by saying that he preferred boys with dark hair and blue eyes. That was a nice Easter egg.

I do want to finish this series before moving on to TDA or any other book in the Shadowhunter series.. but I don't see myself rushing to pick up The Clockwork Prince for a while.

Overall,

Yes, I enjoyed the read
Yes, I will be picking up the second and third of this
No, I am not ready for all the upcoming feels and possible heartbreak
Also-freaking-lutely, I am ready for more Magnus Bane!!!

3.5 stars!
