While the book has many great quotes and thoughts on life in general, I found it to be a slog to read through. I think a top 25 quotes and cliff notes version would have been a better way to spend my time on this one.

Not that many great ideas, and many of the ideas are weird coming from an emperor. I was glad when I finished and (I'm vain) if it had not been so famous I never would have (finished).

- As an emperor of the world, he advises us about how we will be forgotten

- His reasoning is exclusively A is B; B is C; so A is C.

- "Either you are an atom, or you are a human". A false dichotomy and obviously stupid

- "Either the Gods have power, or they don't." Again, a false dichotomy.

This book's only redeeming feature is that it was not meant for publication, so its many, many faults can be somewhat excused. Everyone's fawning over it, however, can not be excused.

The importance of critical thinking:

“If it be right and honest to be spoken or done, undervalue not thyself so much, as to be discouraged from it.”

fairly obvious but important ideas which have been widely paraphrased. A bit too far to the Stocic side, thus lacking in the necessary joy of life. I think Babylon 5's Minbari embody the stoic yet joyful philosophy better.
