Jay Kristoff
In a world where the suns almost never set, a woman gains entry to a school of infamous assassins, seeking vengeance against the powers that destroyed her family. Daughter of an executed traitor, Mia Corvere is barely able to escape her father's failed rebellion with her life. Alone and friendless, she wanders a city built from the bones of a dead god, hunted by the Senate and its thugs. But her gift for speaking with the shadows leads her to the hearth of a retired killer, and a future she never imagined. Now, Mia is apprenticed to the deadliest flock of assassins in the entire Republic-the Red Church. Deadly trials await her within the Church's halls: blades and poisons, treachery and death. If she survives to initiation, she'll be inducted among the chosen of the Lady of Blessed Murder, and be one step closer to the only thing she desires. Revenge. Nevernight will come on the heels of Kristoff's latest YA book, a collaboration with Amie Kaufman from Knopf Books for Young Readers, Illuminae. Knopf is planning a major publicity blitz and featuring Illuminae as its lead title for Fall, on sale October 20th. The marketing and publicity campaign include a multi-city USA tour in the fall, major outreach at consumer and industry events, a national paid advertising campaign, and extensive publicity outreach.

DNF the audiobook: If I can ever 'read' read again (gods I hope so!), I'm sure I'll pick this up and try again.. But as an audiobook, it didn't work in the slightest.. It's so verbose that I kept losing the thread of the narrative. Some of the similes and metaphors passed me by, so I had to scramble to work out what was actually being described because every detail is so protracted.. (what was that 5 minute simile actually about? *Rewind..* Hair you say?!? And this book is cluttered with them, or seemingly so.. ).

So, because it wandered, my mind wandered. So badly in fact, that at one stage I started cleaning the kitchen and I forgot that I had been listening.. And I abhor cleaning...

I am willing to admit that maybe this just isn't an audiobook kind of book.. It happens, and it's why I haven't rated this.. I do have the paperback for future perusal, but the audio was a waste of money..

(Nb. Not the narrators fault in the slightest.. I believe they did the best they could under the circumstances..)

What a damn good book! Nevernight has without a doubt stood up to all the hype I've heard about it. This incredible world that Jay Kristoff has built.. its damn near perfect, the way he builds it. This book had me eating out of its pages, begging for more! The shocking turn it takes near the end, I never seen it coming! I absolutely loved and looked forward to the little notes at the bottom of the pages that would go into detail about words, places, people, history. When I would see * I would quickly look down to see what clever passages Kristoff added. I can't praise this book enough! I am a huge fan now. Huge, huge fan!
