I'll be honest - this could have been primarily a mood thing. It could have been a narrator thing.

Either way, I just found this book frustrating and dull and predictable and cliche.

The fantasy world and the kingdoms controlling magical sources and the politics being primarily the big greedy kingdoms taking the control of the small, nearly dead kingdoms was just.... meh.

Granted there is a lot of potential here. I think the world-building was explained and introduced really well. But overall it just wasn't enough to interest me.

The characters frustrated the hell out of me.

Meira, while she is obviously geared as the bad-ass, underdog MC, instead came across as whiny when things didn't go her way, whiny when she was helping the cause but not how she wanted, whiny when people were nice to her and whiny when people weren't. When she wasn't complaining she was just doing the complete opposite of what she'd been told with very little thought and a righteous attitude.

The other characters weren't any better and honestly, they just ruined it for me.

Now that I have well and truly sounded like a grump about this book, adios.
