Before I Go to Sleep: A Novel

S. J. Watson
"As I sleep, my mind will erase everything I did today. I will wake up tomorrow as I did this morning. Thinking I’m still a child. Thinking I have a whole lifetime of choice ahead of me. . . ." Memories define us. So what if you lost yours every time you went to sleep? Your name, your identity, your past, even the people you love—all forgotten overnight. And the one person you trust may be telling you only half the story. Welcome to Christine's life.

It was an intense book, and slightly repetitive by nature. I liked the ending. Yup

I learned about the book about the same time the movie was released. I wasn't too thrilled with the movie, but I'd heard that the book was better. And it is.

The way the book begins on the 30th of November and then takes you back about two weeks and then back to the 30th feels a bit dis-jarring, but it should. The way the narrative focuses on whether Christine can believe anything that comes to her, from her memories to the stories her husband tells her makes you question what is reality and what is Christine's imagination. There were times I was going back to the beginning of the book trying to see if I could find little clues and then found I couldn't quite place where I'd read about a particular clue of Christine's past.

There was only one small issue I had with the book. There's a memory Christine has about Ben being nude and as they go up to the bedroom they are ripping off each other's clothes. The fact that no one caught this was maddening. If Ben is already nude they are ripping of her clothes. Please, fix this in any further edition.

And if you're reading the book after seeing the movie you may hear Colin Firth's voice when reading Ben's dialogue and you may hear Nicole Kidman's voice for Christine, but that should pass. As the story began to peak I found that the character's were taking on a life of their own.
